Murray Hill / Lifestyle & Information

Lifestyle & Information

Description:

Beginning in the 18th century, Murray Hill has been a prestigious, uptown neighborhood. The area is named after the Murray family, Quaker merchants involved in shipping and overseas trade. Extending from 29th street to 42nd street, Murray Hill was originally flanked by farmland to the north, then the edge Manhattan. From Fifth Avenue in the west to the East River, pre-war buildings and brownstones lined the streets of the upscale district. By the 1990’s, young professionals started moving to the neighborhood, drawn to the reasonably priced properties, as compared to the adjacent Gramercy or Midtown, bringing with them new high-rise developments and renovations, as well as nightlife and entertainment. Nevertheless, the neighborhood has retained its quiet, residential atmosphere, and continues to draw residents due to its convenient location and moderate prices.
